My Grandmother loves butterflies.
About 10 years ago she and my Grandfather came to visit us and we took them to a place called Butterfly World. It was a magical afternoon. At one point I looked over to see my Grandmother standing in the sunlight with hair covered in beautiful butterflies. The look on her face defied age, defied years! She looked beautiful and timeless and seemed to have all of the butterflies transfixed on her every move.
Gram celebrated her 90th birthday recently. In the years since we took that trip to Butterfly World she has created her own butterfly garden in her back yard. It is a thing of beauty:
She collects the caterpillars as they arrive to munch on the plants. In her home there is a lovely terrarium where you can watch them spin their cocoons and eventually open and unveil their transformed selves. If you’re lucky you’ll be there when she releases them: the first flight, magical, especially in the early morning light when the butterflies flit about to welcome the new / old friend to the garden.
They remind me of Gram. Getting older and growing younger at the same time.
