hk+np studio formed in 2010 as a jewellery design collaboration between Hiroko Kobayashi and Neil Prakash. Our approach bridges and connects different industries as we apply our custom design experience garnered from our architectural backgrounds and apply it to the design of jewellery.
Our studio utilizes a blend of traditional and contemporary techniques in the design and manufacturing process to create each piece. Our process is unique in that it combines sketches, origami paper models, computer aided modeling, SLR rapid prototyping, hand casting, and hand polishing. We are also unique in that we offer a variety of surface finishes that allow our jewellery to coordinate with everything from casual attire to formal evening ware. Although we are a small studio, our capability to utilize a range of design resources stands out from traditional craft jewellery studio and is reflected in the expression of our work.
Our intent in the collection that we have developed thus far is to establish a formal language that is clear, concise, and devoid of unnecessary embellishment. In this regard we strive to design jewelry with clear forms, emphasizing defined lines, and with refined detail and finish. It is important for us to achieve a balance of these three elements, and consider the design complete once we have achieved this.
We also aim to achieve a level of relative simplicity in our jewelry as a means to express a more understated, subtler side of ornamentation. In this way we hope to achieve designs that have a timeless quality and defy the changing trends of fashion. For us this is an important aspect of quality design and integral to creating inherent value. Our work is available in gallery shops in British Columbia and Saskatchewan
