About Kevin Wei

I am an author of jewelry objects that engage the art of storytelling. My works are artifacts that record distant or recent human experience as they relate to the present day, and then cast anew as body adornments with deep meaning for the discerning individual. I use computers, robots, cameras, and my own hands as tools. I believe in the extraordinary value of objects with meaningful stories, but I think the shortness, fastness, and excessive-ness encouraged by our digital-ness has fooled us into valuing objects that are without a story. I believe that a great democracy is forming, where all people are free to create virtually anything and bring it across to the material world, but that it is up to us to become makers of truly valuable things, to value the slowness and lushness of lasting stories deliberately embedded in our works, so that we build a material world that understands and honors our new freedom to create and our added responsibility to do so with the utmost care.~Kevin Wei holds advanced degrees in architecture, urbanism, and applied research from Columbia University, as well as a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Carnegie Mellon University. His work in art jewelry is largely self-taught. He is fascinated by patterns and structures. In addition to his work in jeweler, Wei is currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia University in New York City, where he teaches the course “Living Architecture: Responsive Kinetic Systems”. He is looking forward to teaching other workshops to help New York City’s DIY community navigate the intricacies of 3D printing."kevinwei.tumblr.com":http://kevinwei.tumblr.com
