Modern jewelry with a modern conscience – Sharon Z Jewelry
Greetings and salutations!
I started in metalsmithing and jewelry design 11 years ago (Really! it was January of 2003) after a series of jobs left me feeling creatively unsatisfied. I have always loved creating art and making something out of nothing. I love the process of designing and creating in metal; using old techniques to create modern pieces. I love the idea that art and design can create connections between all of us and can show us that we aren’t as separate as we think.
And about this modern conscience – industry standards are great. They allow us in the jewelry and metalsmithing community to agree on the basics, but in my opinion they don’t go far enough. So I take it a step further. A lot of us are using all recycled precious metals, and I’m no different. I use suppliers like United Precious Metals and Hoover and Strong who have pledged to use 100% recycled metals. And when it comes to diamonds and sapphires, I go a step beyond the industry standard of the Kimberley Process. In my opinion, we can do better. So I choose to use recycled diamonds (pulled out of jewelry during the process of recycling and refining) as well as lab-grown sapphires, Moissanite and lab-grown emeralds to avoid mining in all facets of my work.
I hope to be able to share more of my process with you.
