Guest Curator: Design Glut

November 25, 2009

This week’s guest curator is Design Glut, a dynamic New York City duo (Kegan Fisher & Liz Kinnmark) who not only create and sell their own work but also publish a blog filled with great stories, interviews, and advice from creative entrepreneurs. Says Liz, “We like to play with your perception – whether that means objects that play tricks with your eyes or jewelry that questions the notion of value.” Twitter @designglut.

What Design Glut thinks is Super

Perception Vinyl Record Necklace
by Aroha Silhouettes

This necklace from Aroha Silhouettes is aptly named “Perception.” You’re sure to get comments on this! We love the way it messes with our heads.

2-D to 3-D Coat Tree
by Interesting Particulars

Classic yet trippy. This 2-D vinyl decal of a coat rack comes with actual pegs you can mount to it, so you can really hang coats. An extremely clever space-saving solution.

Mayfly Coat
by Little Houses

We adore asymetrical, geometric cuts in clothing. Little Houses does it REALLY well. All of their coats are fantastic, but this long gray one looks like it would keep you particularly cozy

Gatz (stripes) Bow Tie
by Skinny Vinny

For a little asymmetrical touch, go for this bow tie by Skinny Vinny. It takes a classic and makes it modern.

As-Tu du Feu?
by Melanie Favreau

Many times the simplest solution is the best. Example: these earrings. I can’t think of anything they wouldn’t look good with. At $55, a great deal for something you could easily wear everyday.

Gold Slender Bar Ring
by Metal Sugar

Speaking of simplicity, this ring also does it right. Possibly the world’s most elegant knuckle duster?

Caffeine Necklace
by Made With Molecules

For all the caffeine freaks out there, this scientist-turned-jeweler has you covered. The caffeine molecule in sterling silver is sure to make you look chic and smart! And if caffeine isn’t your thing, go for the serotonin or dopamine molecules.

Interstice Bracelet
by Nervous System

On the subject of smart jewelry, check out the Interstice Bracelet from Nervous System. Designed by a process that involves pattern-generating algorithms and 3D printed in plastic, it’s guaranteed to make you feel like you’re living in a fabulous superfuture.

Captain Smith Hand-Printed Wallpaper – Promenade
by Grow House Grow!

Bring complex patterns to your walls with this decadent wallpaper from Grow House Grow. The octopus pattern would be an incredible accent in your space.

Optimism Buttons
by Reed Seifer

And finally, who couldn’t use a little more optimism right now? This set of 5 buttons means you can share with your friends. Paired with a nice card, it would make a great gift that doesn’t break the bank.
